New 300-bed regional hospital commissioned in Bono East
The Nkoranza North District Hospital, the first purpose-built regional facility in Bono East, opens its doors after a four-year construction project costing GH¢380 million.
President Mahama on Friday commissioned the Nkoranza North District Hospital in Bono East Region, a 300-bed facility that becomes the most comprehensively equipped public hospital between Sunyani and Kumasi after four years of construction at a total cost of GH¢380 million.nnThe hospital features two operating theatres, a fully equipped neonatal intensive care unit, a dialysis centre with twelve stations, and a diagnostic laboratory capable of processing over five hundred tests daily. A solar-hybrid power system will ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to critical care units.nnRegional Health Director Dr Akua Asante said the facility would serve a catchment population of over 600,000 people who previously had to travel to Sunyani or Kumasi for specialist care. “The maternal mortality rate in this region has been one of the highest in the country. This hospital changes that,” she said.nnThe project was initially scheduled for completion in 2024 but experienced delays due to foreign exchange challenges affecting the import of specialist equipment. The contractor, Julius Berger Ghana, absorbed additional costs arising from the cedi depreciation rather than renegotiating the contract.nnMembers of Parliament from the seven constituencies closest to the hospital led delegations of constituents to the commissioning, where the President also sod-cut a 120-unit nurses’ quarters adjacent to the hospital grounds.nnThe Bono East facility is the third new district hospital commissioned this year, following projects in Nkwanta North in Oti Region and Builsa South in Upper East.
