Korle Lagoon slum to be replaced with high-rise container housing – Ayariga

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has unveiled a redevelopment initiative to transform the slum district along the Korle Lagoon in Accra into high-rise container housing. This effort aims to enhance sanitation and public health standards in the region.

Following military-led evacuation and clearing operations, accumulated waste will be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre in Nsawam. The initiative also includes dredging the Korle Lagoon to tackle environmental challenges and improve sanitation conditions.

During a press briefing at the site, the minister discussed these plans with journalists and expressed optimism about public backing, though acknowledging potential pushback from certain residents. He asserted: “Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess.”
